ENDURANCE ATHLETE AND NOW… ENTRANT IN

THE 2020 WORLD MARATHON CHALLENGE

Nontuthuko Mgabhi

has completed more than 50 marathons, 15 ultra-marathons including four Comrades Marathons in the last 5 years.

The Mission

Nontu is dedicating the race to children’s education in an underprivileged rural school – the Khiphinkunzi Primary School in Mtubatuba.

What's the Goal

She intends to raise R3.5 Million to upgrade the school by building 5 classrooms and 2 administration offi ces.

About the Cause

In the last 5 years, Nontuthuko (Nontu) Mgabhi has completed more than 50 marathons, 15 ultra-marathons including four Comrades Marathons. At 32, she provides eloquent witness that living life to the fullest involves facing your fears and moving beyond them, regardless of your age. This time, around Nontu would like “to go beyond” for a child.

The World Marathon Challenge would be Nontu’s biggest endeavour to date. She has been accepted in the 2020 World Marathon Challenge which takes place on 6-12 February 2020. The challenge involves 7 marathons, on 7 continents and in 7 successive days.

The Vision

Nontu is dedicating the race to children’s education in an underprivileged rural school – the Khiphinkunzi Primary School in Mtubatuba. The school was founded in 1997 and currently has a total of 657 learners (349 boys and 308 girls) between the age of 5 to 15 years.

The school is in desperate need of basic infrastructural resources. The school infrastructure undermines effective teaching and learning. All the windowpanes are shattered. Old pieces of chalkboard cover the back windows. The pot-holed floors have not seen polish in years because there is almost no floor to polish but many pot-holes in the classrooms. The implications of learning under such are frightening.

The parents of the children are unemployed and depend on government grants (pension or child support). Majority of the families are child-headed, or are raised by their grandparents and a significant number of children who attend the school do not have Birth Certificates as their parents do not have identity documents. The children go to bed with empty stomaches and they then have to travel a long distance to and from school without any food.

School infrastructure undermines effective teaching and learning. The school faces enormous challenges:

  • The school’s enrolment is 657 learners, from grade R to grade 7. This hardly meets the high enrolment demands in this area; the school has to turn down many worthy applicants each year due to limited facilities.
  • Each class has over 109 learners under the care of one teacher.
  • Due to overcrowding, health challenges become rampant.
  • The poor learner-teacher ratio undermines effective class control and discipline.
  • The school only has one administration office, which is shared between the School Principal, the Head of the Departments and the Administration Clerk.

For this reason Nontu is dedicating this race to make a contribution, to the alleviation of this depressing situation at the school. Her intenttion is to raise R3.5 Million to upgrade the school by building 5 classrooms and 2 administration offices.

Nontu's Mission

For Nontu is a matter of fundamental principle and ethical imperative. Nontu understands how critical it is for a child to get a good education. Hailing from a rural area of Mseleni, Nontu herself was subjected to conditions such as these whilst growing up. She has now made it her mission to ensure fewer children are exposed to such experiences. However, in order to achieve this she needs your support and assistance. She believes that “You, too, can make a difference”.
